To become professionally registered with the Engineering Council to obtain the following professional titles, you must first become a member of a licensed professional engineering institution (PEI):

These are licensed to assess candidates for inclusion on the national register.

Professional Engineering Institutions

Your chosen PEI will act as the awarding body for your registration. Therefore, it is recommended that you join one that best represents your interests or discipline.

PEIs are best placed to assess your competence for professional registration. If you find that two or three would be suitable, you can choose to join more than one.

The benefits of joining a PEI include:

  • Showing your professional status, which may include post-nominals
  • Supporting and guiding your professional development, including through the professional registration process
  • Attending regional events, seminars, conferences, often at a special membership rate
  • Receiving monthly journals and technical publications
  • Accessing their technical library and careers advice
  • Networking opportunities and special interest groups
  • Accessing health and legal advice

The list of PEIs can be found below.

Professional Affiliates

A Professional Affiliate is an incorporated body or engineering institution closely associated with the Engineering Council. Professional Affiliates are influential and often work to further the knowledge and understanding of a particular area or aspect of engineering and technology.

In addition to having access to key Engineering Council guidance, Professional Affiliates are also able to provide a pathway to professional registration for their members through setting up an agreement with a licensed professional engineering institution.

For Potential Members

The value of membership of a Professional Affiliate is similar to that of a professional engineering licensee. The difference is that Professional Affiliates are not licensed to assess candidates for professional registration. However, many of them are able to offer their members the opportunity to become professionally registered, through an agreement with a licensed institution.
