The UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence and Commitment (UK-SPEC) explains the requirements that people must meet to become registered as an Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng). It also includes examples of activities that demonstrate the required competence and commitment.

Each registration title requires demonstration of five broad areas of competence and commitment:

  • Knowledge and understanding
  • Design, development and solving engineering problems
  • Responsibility, management and leadership
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Professional commitment

The areas above are set out separately for each title and constitute the standards. To assist potential registrants, their advisers and professional review interviewers in deciding which title an individual should apply for, a comparison table of the three titles is included in UK-SPEC. A separate table with examples of evidence for each title is also available to support potential registrants.

Since its introduction in 2003, UK-SPEC has become well respected and recognised globally. It was most recently reviewed and updated in 2020, with the fourth edition published in August 2020, implemented by 31 December 2021.
