Congratulations on achieving and maintaining professional registration!

You’ve earned the right to call yourself a professional engineer or technician, but are you making the most of your title?

Whichever title you have gained – Engineering Technician, ICT Technician, Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer – it assures your employer, colleagues, customers and society that you meet the internationally recognised standards of competence and commitment relevant to your field.

Using your post-nominal letters wherever appropriate, eg on business cards, LinkedIn profile or email signatures, is a demonstration of your professional status. This will help you stand apart from non-registered peers. You can also make use of the registrant logo, which is available to download [here].

The Engineering Council works closely with international partners to ensure that the Engineering Council Standards are globally recognised. This helps to facilitate the international mobility of registrants. More information can be found in International Recognition.

By becoming professionally registered you have made a commitment to maintaining your competence, through Continuing Professional Development (CPD). As a member of a Licensed Professional Engineering Institution or Professional Affiliate (PEI), you will have access to life-long learning opportunities. Many have systems for recording your CPD, so do make use of this facility if yours is one of them. This includes the mycareerpath system, which has been specially designed for registrants to plan, record and evaluate your professional development.

You will also have committed to observe your institution’s Code of Conduct. In addition, the Engineering Council provides guidance for registrants on sustainability, ethical principles, risk, whistleblowing and security. If you are not already familiar with this information, please do take time to read this.

As a Licensed PEI or Professional Affiliate member you should be offered event invitations, up-to-date news and journals, and website access to members only content. So do remember to let your institution know if any of your contact details change.

You are encouraged to contribute to and support the work of your Licensed PEI or Professional Affiliate. The profession relies heavily on the considerable volunteer effort and other resources that registrants can bring to bear on current issues.

Remember that your professional title is protected under our Royal Charter. To remain on the national Register and retain the right to use your post-nominal letters, you must also ensure that your annual subscription fees for membership and registration are paid to your Licensed PEI.
